Biography
Robert Brennan is the Co-Founder and CEO of All Hands AI, the company behind OpenHands (formerly OpenDevin), an open-source platform for AI-driven software development that has become the most popular open-source coding agent with 69,000+ GitHub stars. Brennan graduated from Columbia College and Columbia Engineering with degrees in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Linguistics. He began his career at Google as a senior software engineer focused on natural language processing, where he wrote an algorithm to extract answers to open-ended questions (e.g., 'Why is the sky blue?') that was incorporated into Google Search in August 2013, resulting in Patent US9940367B1. He subsequently co-founded DataFire.io (an open-source API integration platform) and LucyBot (automated API documentation deployed by Fortune 500 companies), before joining Fairwinds as VP of Product Development, where he conceptualized and built Fairwinds Insights, a Kubernetes auditing platform. In March 2024, inspired by Cognition's Devin demo, he co-founded All Hands AI alongside Graham Neubig (CMU professor, chief scientist) and Xingyao Wang (chief AI officer) to build OpenHands in the open. The company raised a $5M seed round led by Menlo Ventures in September 2024, and has grown to approximately 30 people with over $20M raised. OpenHands reached #1 on the SWE-bench Verified leaderboard in November 2025 and its foundational paper was published at ICLR 2025. He is based in Boston, Massachusetts.
The most popular open-source AI coding agent platform with 69K+ GitHub stars. Provides a sandboxed environment where AI agents write code, run commands, and browse the web to solve software engineering tasks autonomously.
Led OpenHands to #1 on SWE-bench Verified leaderboard (53% resolve rate) using inference-time scaling and a critic model -- the only open-source agent in the top 10.
A composable and extensible foundation for building production AI agents, enabling developers to create custom agents on top of the OpenHands runtime.
Authored the algorithm at Google for extracting answers to open-ended questions (Patent US9940367B1), incorporated into Google Search in 2013.
Conceptualized and built Fairwinds Insights, a Kubernetes auditing and governance platform used by enterprises to manage cluster security and compliance.
Co-founded DataFire.io, an open-source platform for building APIs and integrations, enabling developers to connect hundreds of services.
The Cognition folks came out with their Devin demo and I -- and I think every other software engineer in the world -- was amazed at that video. It scared us that it was being developed as closed source and being kept in this walled garden we couldn't see and contribute to and really own as a development community.
The collective intelligence of a global community, working in the open, will always outpace what can be accomplished behind closed doors.
The agent isn't always right. You do need to read its code and understand what it's trying to do... trust but verify.
We are really oriented towards senior engineers who are working on production grade code bases.
All the research we do and all the know-how for how the agents do as good a job as possible at solving software tasks, that should be open source. That should be available to every developer.
