Biography
Paul Gauthier is a serial technology entrepreneur, investor, and the creator of Aider, the leading open-source AI pair programming tool for the terminal. Aider has amassed over 42,000 GitHub stars, 5.7 million PyPI installations, and processes 15 billion tokens per week. Gauthier co-founded Inktomi with Eric Brewer in 1996 while at UC Berkeley, building the first commercial search engine based on distributed-memory parallel computation — it went on to power Yahoo, AOL, and other major search engines before being acquired by Yahoo in 2002. He served as CTO at Groupon (after his local search startup Ludic Labs was acquired) and as VP of Engineering at Geomagical Labs, which developed AR-based room visualization technology and was acquired by IKEA in 2021. Gauthier holds a BSc in Computer Science from Dalhousie University (1994) and a master's from the University of Washington, with PhD-level research at UC Berkeley. He was awarded an honorary degree from Dalhousie University at its June 2025 Convocation in recognition of his contributions to technology and society. A native of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, he is also a philanthropist who founded the Cole Harbour Foundation supporting children's education and launched the 100 Wild Islands conservation campaign through the Nova Scotia Nature Trust.
Open-source AI pair programming tool for the terminal with 42,000+ GitHub stars. Pioneered repository mapping, diff-based editing, and the Architect/Editor dual-model approach for LLM-assisted coding. Processes 15 billion tokens weekly and 88% of its own new code was written by itself.
Widely-cited LLM code editing benchmark suite testing 225 Exercism exercises across C++, Go, Java, JavaScript, Python, and Rust. Used industry-wide to evaluate and compare LLM coding capabilities.
Co-founded with Eric Brewer in 1996. Built the first commercial search engine based on distributed-memory parallel computation, powering Yahoo, AOL, and other major portals. Acquired by Yahoo in 2002.
As VP of Engineering, developed computer vision technology enabling smartphone users to build and decorate 3D augmented reality versions of their homes. Acquired by IKEA in 2021.
Developed a novel approach using tree-sitter AST parsing to create concise repository maps, giving LLMs better understanding of large codebases for more accurate code edits.
Pioneered separating code reasoning (architect) from code editing (editor) using two models in tandem, enabling reasoning models like o1 and DeepSeek R1 to direct faster editing models.
Founded philanthropic organization supporting children's education from birth through post-secondary in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia.
Very large context windows aren't useful in practice. Every model seems to get confused when you feed them more than ~25-30k tokens.
Aider is designed for developers who live in the terminal. It's fast, precise, and gets out of your way while still providing powerful AI assistance.
I'm an entrepreneur, investor and advisor whose passion is consumer internet products. I like figuring out and looking out for new capabilities, then gathering up a good group of people and having some luck while working hard.
